MerrieBeth Cox named Purdue’s 27th Golden Girl

Saturday, March 1, 2008

MerrieBeth Cox, an incoming Purdue freshman from Roselle , IL , topped the competition to become Purdue’s 27th Golden Girl on Saturday, March 1. She will take over the legendary twirling position in August when the 2008-09 school year commences.

MerrieBeth will bring a dynamic energy to Ross Ade Stadium and Mackey Arena. Fans will love her because of her twirling speed, her advanced level of technical ability and her ability to incorporate dance and gymnastics into her routines,” said Alisha Kuckartz, Director of the Twirlers and Dancers for Purdue Bands.

Cox, who has been twirling since the age of three, was selected as 2007 Miss Illinois Outstanding Teen. She has represented the United States in Peru as a twirler and has also been a volleyball and basketball player and cheerleader. There were a lot of unique talents in the competition Saturday, representative of the best performers coming out of the various twirling organizations around the United States ,” Kuckartz added.

Judges selected Erin Powell of Canton , OH , to twirl in the Girl in Black position. Sara and Chellie Zou, of Elkhart , IN , will perform as the Silver Twins. During the current school year, Powell is performing as part of Purdue’s Twirling Line, and the Zou twins are performing with the Golduster Dance Team.
The announcement was made by Jay S. Gephart, Director of the “All-American” Marching Band late Saturday, March 1, at Elliott Hall of Music following a long day of competition that included field tryouts and personal interviews.

Members of the Purdue Bands’ faculty and staff judged the candidates and made the final selections. Judges consider twirling talent, showmanship, poise and ommunication skills in selecting the top positions, all of whom serve as ambassadors for Purdue University as well as entertainers.

Prior to Saturday’s competition, twirlers from across the United States were invited to submit audition DVDs in the solo twirler competition’s preliminary round. From that pool, eight women were selected to come to campus to compete for the positions.

With the move to spring solo twirler auditions several years ago, Purdue aligned itself with other major university band programs which use auditions as a tool to attract top twirling talent from across the nation to their school. All the twirling candidates had to be accepted by Purdue to audition.

Over the years Purdue’s Golden Girl has enjoyed a national reputation as one of the top twirlers in the United States . Former director Al Wright began the tradition in 1954 when quarterback Lenny Dawson was referred to by the press as Purdue’s “Golden Boy.” Wright put gold sequins on Juanita Carpenter and named her the “Golden Girl.”  After Dawson graduated his nickname faded, but the Golden Girl has continued as a strong Purdue tradition.

Meredith Winnefeld giving it her all as she performs her X-Strut at Twirl Mania at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.  Provided y: Amber Lena.  Meredith

All Twirlers were allowed to try out for the Disney's daytime and nighttime parades, perform at the Showcase at the Galaxy Palace Theater in the Magic Kingdom , and new this year, the Collegiate Classic finalists performed in EPCOT.

Meredith competed in the Top 10 "Elite Gold Invitational" in the Advanced 13-15 age division and brought home the following awards: 1st in Best Appearing, 1st in Advanced Solo and qualified for the Elite 13+ Strut Off (she won the 12 & under strut off in '07) & She was 1st Runner Up in the Advanced Miss Twirl Mania 13-15.

As most of you are aware that back in November 2007 ABC's EXTREME HOME MAKEOVER surprised a University of Louisville's( That's where our daughter Samantha Kolasa is going to school of a full-ride as their Feature Twirler "Cardinal Girl".) marching band student who performs with the band while his father pushes his wheel chair as Patrick is blind and can't walk with a complete home makeover!!!  As an extra the show re-did the marching bands practice field...VERY EXCITING!!!  Well, the show is finally aired on Sunday, Feb 17th @ 8:00 eastern time on ABC. We don't know how much of the band....Samantha....ended up on the editing floor, and maybe she'll get her 10 seconds of fame.  Donna and Joe Kolasa

What's Royal Blue and wears a white hard hat? Jorie Lynn Walker of Delaware  (1998-2005 Miss College Majorette of Delaware , contest director 2006 and 2007) ~! Jorie has been having the time of her life working on the building and construction of Extreme Makeover Home Edition. She has been putting in at least 10 hours a day to assist crew members and construction teams to build two homes in Wilmington , Delaware . Jorie has said, "This experience is not something that can be describe well with words. Everyone works hard to insure the family's homes will be done on time and has a great time doing it. You may be asked to pick up pieces of wood or sweep saw dust off the floors or even work in the tent feeding other members of the crew and construction team. No job is too small or too big and each is extremely important" It just goes to show that twirlers truly care about their community in which they live. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK JORIE!

The UK Majorettes have updated their website.  It has a new look and extra features!  Feel free to take a look: www.ukmajorettes.com.  Kristen Eichhorn

Alexa Bourdage is enjoying an amazing first year as The University of Texas Feature Twirler.   Leading The Show Band of the Southwest, Alexa performed for nearly 100,000 fans each weekend at pre-game and half time shows in the Darrell K. Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium during football season.  The season was capped off with a magical trip to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego California . Performing at the Battle of the Bands, America ’s Largest Balloon Parade and in Qualcomm Stadium for pre-game and half time shows was truly the recognition of a dream come true for this life long twirler! In addition to her pre-game and half time performances, Alexa also represents the University at the famous Hex Rally,  President Receptions, performing for and greeting prestigious alumni and dignitaries, and at University functions such as Explore UT , welcoming 50,000 visitors to the UT campus.  Alexa is a 4.0 student majoring in Architecture.  She enjoys performing and representing the University of Texas as a positive role model and an inspiration for future UT Longhorns!

It is with pleasure and yet, with regret, that I would like to inform all of you that I will be retiring from Studio D dance studio, effective June 16, 2008.  I am most happy to announce that Lisa Collins a wonderful dance enthusiast, teacher, choreographer and judge will be continuing on with the studio. Yes, I will be staying involved in baton twirling and being a guest teacher for Lisa.  Deardra Leslie  Canada

Judge Amy Jones (new resident of California ) will be in the audience at Dancing with the STARS on April 8th. She is beyond excited and it should be a really cool experience. Tune in 9:00pm est time Tuesday on ABC.
